Pellet and firewood prices in Montenegro 2026: the pellet price cap of €250 and €270 per tonne, firewood prices per metre and how to buy fuel

On 24 September 2026 the Government of Montenegro capped the retail price of pellets at no more than €270 per tonne for class A1 pellets and no more than €250 per tonne for class A2 pellets, VAT included. The decision enters into force the day after its publication in the Official Gazette and applies until 30 June 2027. Converted to a 15 kg bag, the maximum price is about €4.05 for A1 and €3.75 for A2. In August 2026 a metre of beech in Nikšić cost €55 to €65, oak and hornbeam €60 to €70, and split firewood with delivery €70 to €80, the same as last year.

The pellet price cap was adopted by the Government at the request of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, while firewood prices are not capped and depend on the seller and the town. What is the maximum pellet price in Montenegro in 2026?

• The cap applies to retail sales of first and second class pellets, from the day after the decision is published in the Official Gazette until 30 June 2027.

What is the difference between A1 and A2 pellets?

• Classes A1 and A2 are defined by the European wood pellet standard EN ISO 17225-2, and A1 pellets leave less ash than A2 pellets.
• A1 pellets are more expensive, but because of the lower ash content the stove needs cleaning less often.
• The pellet class must be stated on the bag, so check it before paying and compare it with the maximum price for that class.

What should you check when buying pellets and firewood?

• Ask whether the firewood price refers to a stacked metre or a cubic metre of solid wood, because a stacked metre also contains empty space.
• Buy dry wood, because green wood gives less heat and more soot in the chimney.
• Ask for a fiscal receipt, because it proves the price and the pellet class if you report the seller.
• If a seller charges more than the maximum pellet price, you can report it to the market inspectorate.

How can you cut heating costs?

• Insulating walls, the roof and windows reduces fuel consumption, and the energy performance certificate shows a flat's energy class.
• More and more households are replacing part of their firewood with heating by air conditioner, so check the price of electricity at the higher and lower tariff before you decide.
