Second-hand in Montenegro: where to buy and sell used furniture, appliances and electronics, what shipping costs and what rights you have

Where can you buy and sell second-hand items in Montenegro? On online classifieds, in local Facebook and Telegram groups and at moving-out sales. On Fijaka a listing is free and can carry up to 30 photos. Sending up to 5 kg across the country with Pošta Crne Gore costs 2.50 euros, and a buyer must report a hidden defect within 8 days of finding it.

Used furniture, washing machines, fridges, phones and children's things change hands most often when people move, and on the coast also when owners furnish or clear holiday flats. How do you price a used item?

What does shipping cost?

For small items, Pošta Crne Gore's courier service is the simplest way to send across the country:

Packaging is charged on top if the post office provides it. Cash on delivery is available as an extra service. For furniture and large appliances, most buyers collect in person or book a van.

How do you meet and pay safely?

• Meet in a public place or, for large items, with a second person present, and test the item before you pay.
• Pay on handover. Do not send an advance to someone you have never met, and do not click payment or courier links sent by a stranger.
• For phones and laptops, check that the device is not locked to someone else's account and that the serial number matches the box or receipt.
• Keep the chat and, for anything valuable, a short signed note of the sale with the price and the date.

What rights does a buyer have?

In a sale between two private persons, the seller's liability comes from the Law on Obligations, not consumer law. The buyer should check the item on handover. For a hidden defect the buyer must notify the seller within 8 days of discovering it, and the seller is not liable for hidden defects that appear more than 6 months after handover, unless they knew about the defect or a longer period was agreed. A clause that excludes liability does not protect a seller who knowingly hid a defect.

Do you pay tax when you sell your used things?

No, not on occasional sales of your own belongings: the Law on Personal Income Tax taxes capital gains from real estate, company shares and securities, not personal items. If you buy and resell goods regularly for profit, that becomes a business and needs to be registered.
