How do buses work in Montenegro, and what do they cost? Buses link every town. On a Friday in early October 2026, 33 buses ran from Podgorica to Budva, taking about 1.5 hours for 6 to 9 euros, and 25 ran to Kotor for 7.50 to 10 euros. A city bus in Podgorica costs 0.90 euros for 90 minutes.
Montenegro has no national bus company. Dozens of private carriers share the routes, and Podgorica bus station alone handles more than 300 departures a day from about 100 carriers. The spread in journey times comes from the route: express buses take the fastest road, while others stop in every village. Buses to Žabljak left Podgorica at 05:45, 11:43 and 14:38 only, so plan a trip to Durmitor around them. Between Podgorica and Bar the train is a good alternative, with 11 trains a day each way for 2.80 euros.

How do you buy a ticket?
You can buy at the ticket office of any bus station or online at BusTicket4.me, which sells tickets for most carriers. An online ticket arrives by e-mail and its price already includes the station service charge.
Most carriers now accept the QR code on your phone for BusTicket4.me tickets, but some still want a printed ticket. In September 2026 Podgorica bus station told Portal RTCG that printing an online ticket at its counter costs 1 euro, and that this is free for BusTicket4.me tickets. A new law explicitly allows electronic tickets, and the station expects more carriers to accept them.
Access to the platforms in Podgorica is controlled: you pass the gate with your bus ticket or buy a platform ticket for 1 euro. If you cancel an online ticket at least 24 hours before departure, you get back 90% of the price, minus the station charges. With the flexible cancellation option you can cancel up to 1 hour before an intercity departure and 2 hours before an international one. Return tickets are usually valid for 30 or 60 days, depending on the carrier.
What does Podgorica bus station offer?
The station is at Trg Golootočkih žrtava 1, next to the railway station and about 900 m from the city centre. It is open 24 hours a day, and its information line is +382 20 620 430. Inside are cafés, shops, a post office, a bank, ATMs, car rental desks and Wi-Fi.
Left luggage is open from 06:00 to 22:00 and costs 1 euro per bag for each hour started, or 4 euros per bag for the whole day. City bus line 6A runs from the station to the centre, next to Hotel Crna Gora and the National Theatre.

The city company Putevi runs 89 buses, 64 of them in service every day. In September 2026 it confirmed that the fare stays at 0.90 euros for 90 minutes and that pupils and pensioners keep riding free. Free cards are issued at a counter on Independence Square, and the 2026 application deadline was extended to 30 September. Timetables and live bus positions are shown on Google Maps.
Can you take luggage, pets and bikes?
Big suitcases go in the luggage hold, and drivers usually charge 1 euro per bag, paid in cash. Whether pets and bicycles can travel depends on the carrier, so ask at the ticket office before you buy.
