Budva Old Town is the walled core of one of the oldest urban centres on the Adriatic, with a history of more than 2,500 years. A ticket for the Budva City Museum costs 5 euros, 3 euros for children aged 12 to 18, and children under 12 enter free. A walk on the city walls costs 2 euros, and the walls are open daily from 10 to 20 h, from April to November. The "Jovo Ivanović" Modern Gallery and the "Stefan Mitrov Ljubiša" Memorial House are free to enter. What do you see in the Budva City Museum?
- Budva was first recorded as an archaeological site in 1938, and smaller excavations were carried out in 1956 and 1957.
- The archaeological collection began to take shape in 1962, and after the 1979 earthquake a large necropolis from the Hellenistic, Roman and late antique periods was uncovered.
- Today's museum building opened in 2003 in the heart of the Old Town, and in 2005 it received the "Green Apple" award in London.
- The exhibition space covers more than 400 square metres on four levels: the first three are devoted to archaeology, and the fourth holds the ethnographic collection.
What are the walls and the Citadel?
- The Budva city walls are open to visitors from April to November, and the 2-euro ticket includes a brochure on the history of the walls.
- The Citadel is a medieval castle dedicated to St Mary and the most monumental building in the Old Town.
- The Citadel complex preserves ramparts with a panoramic view, the remains of the Church of St Mary, platforms, towers and a barracks from the Austrian period.
- The Citadel library holds more than 5,000 books on the wars in the Balkans and on the rise and fall of communism, and from the Citadel you can see the island of Sveti Nikola.
