Train in Montenegro 2026: the Bar–Belgrade night train, local timetables, ticket prices and sleeper fares

How do you travel by train in Montenegro, and what does it cost? Željeznički prevoz Crne Gore (ŽPCG) runs 11 trains a day each way between Bar and Podgorica, a trip of about an hour for 2.80 euros in second class. The year-round night train to Belgrade takes about 11 hours and costs 23.80 euros, plus 8 euros or more for a couchette. Since 21 July 2026 tickets can also be bought online.

The network is small: one main line from the port of Bar through Podgorica and the mountains to Bijelo Polje and on to Serbia, and a branch from Podgorica to Nikšić. There is no railway to Budva, Kotor, Tivat or Herceg Novi. The figures below come from ŽPCG's timetable and price list on 25 September 2026; the current timetable is valid until 12 December 2026.

Which train lines are there?

On the Bar line the first train leaves Bar at 05:13 and the last at 21:13; from Podgorica the last train to Bar leaves at 22:54. Nikšić trains leave Podgorica at 08:00, 12:50, 15:35, 18:30 and 21:45. Danilovgrad is 29 minutes from Podgorica and costs 1.80 euros.

When does the train to Belgrade run?

The night train runs every day of the year:

In summer a second, daytime train is added. In 2026 train 1130 left Bar at 09:00 and reached Belgrade Centar at 20:17, and train 1131 left Belgrade Centar at 09:45 and reached Bar at 21:10, between 12 June and 14 September. The line itself is an attraction. The Belgrade–Bar railway is 476.59 km long, 175 km of it in Montenegro, with 254 tunnels and more than 435 bridges. North of Podgorica it crosses the Mala Rijeka viaduct, 498 m long and 198 m high, and reaches its highest point, 1,032 m, at Kolašin.

What do couchettes and sleepers cost?

On the night train a bed is paid on top of the ticket:

A second-class ticket from Bar to Belgrade with a bed in a six-berth couchette therefore comes to 31.80 euros. Couchettes and sleepers fill up in summer, so book ahead.

How do you buy a ticket?

Since 21 July 2026 tickets for the international trains and for every domestic route can be bought on ŽPCG's ticket site. The ticket arrives by e-mail and is shown on a phone or printed on A4 paper; in its first seven days the system sold 787 tickets. You can also buy at the ticket offices in Bar, Sutomore, Podgorica, Nikšić and Bijelo Polje. If you board at one of those stations without a ticket, the conductor charges 1 euro extra.

Which discounts are there?

The K-15 card costs 3 euros and is valid for the school year; the K-5 costs 5 euros and is valid for two years. Regular commuters can buy a monthly pass, for example 30 euros between Podgorica and Sutomore, or 21 euros for travellers under 26, and an annual pass for unlimited travel on the whole network costs 300 euros.

Can you take pets and luggage?

Small animals in a carrier, cage or basket travel free, and a dog up to 30 cm at the shoulder may sit on its owner's lap. Larger dogs need a short lead and a muzzle, and not every departure can take them, so check before you travel. Pets are not allowed in the restaurant car, except guide and assistance dogs. What changes next?

On 27 May 2026 ŽPCG signed a contract with Stadler for three new four-car electric FLIRT trains, financed with support from the EBRD and largely identical to the trains already running in Serbia. They are meant to bring modern electric trains to cross-border services between the two countries.
