Montenegro's Health Insurance Fund covers IVF (IVF/ICSI) for married and unmarried couples and for a woman not living in a marriage or cohabitation: four cycles if they have no children, three if they have one healthy child and two if they have two healthy children, until the woman turns 45. Alongside the cycles the Fund also covers freezing good-quality embryos for a year at a time and transferring embryos after thawing. The path runs through your chosen gynaecologist, an authorised doctor who makes the proposal and a referral to an institution under contract with the Fund.

- Good-quality embryos are frozen at the Fund's expense for a year at a time.
- Insured people of reproductive age up to 37 who have cancer or another serious illness whose treatment causes infertility, and who have no children, are entitled to fertility preservation, on the proposal of a Clinical Centre panel.
- For male infertility the Fund covers one Micro TESE procedure for IVF.
How do you get a referral for IVF?
- When your chosen gynaecologist finds that pregnancy cannot be achieved by other treatment, they refer the woman to an authorised doctor, a gynaecologist with at least three years of experience in human reproduction, at the Clinical Centre of Montenegro or the "Danilo I" General Hospital in Cetinje.
- For male infertility the chosen general practitioner refers the man to a urologist with the same experience at the Clinical Centre of Montenegro.
- The authorised doctor makes the proposal for IVF on a medical report form.
- Based on the proposal, the chosen gynaecologist issues the woman a referral for treatment.
- The woman chooses a health institution that has an IVF contract with the Fund.
- The proposal can also be made by an authorised doctor at a private institution licensed by the Ministry of Health, but the Fund then does not reimburse the cost of that proposal.
Which documents do you need?
- For the woman: medical reports on microbiological, ultrasound and hormone tests, cervical screening and other findings on infertility treatment.
- For the man: microbiological tests, a semen analysis and semen culture and other findings.
- Medical reports are valid for six months from the date of issue.
- Marriage is proven with a marriage register extract, and cohabitation with a statement certified by a notary.
- The number of the couple's healthy children is proven with a statement certified by a notary.
- A woman not living in a marriage or cohabitation also submits to the IVF committee a medical council finding, a psychiatrist's opinion, a social worker's opinion and a certified statement that she does not live in a relationship.
