How do you get to Ostrog Monastery? The road to Ostrog leaves the main Podgorica-Nikšić road at Bogetići and climbs the slopes of Ostroška greda, first to the Lower Monastery and then to the Upper Monastery in the cliff. From the Lower to the Upper Monastery it is no more than 30 minutes on foot or about 10 minutes by car. There is no entrance ticket, and the monastery runs a guest house for pilgrims.

The monastery was founded in the first half of the 17th century by St Basil, then Metropolitan of Herzegovina, who died there in 1671. Its present appearance dates from 1923 to 1926, after a fire destroyed most of the complex; the two small cave churches survived. The door into the cave church is so low that only children and elderly people can pass without bowing deeply.

What should you wear, and can you stay overnight?
As at any Orthodox monastery, visitors are expected to dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, and to keep quiet near the churches. Pilgrims traditionally bring gifts such as clothing, blankets or soap for the monks.
