Peaks of the Balkans crosses the border away from official crossings. The Mountaineering Association of Montenegro reminds hikers that they must report the crossing to the Montenegrin border police in good time to obtain approval, and the neighbouring countries have their own procedures, so plan it weeks ahead.
When should you go?
The high peaks are usually free of snow from June to September, and July and August are the most reliable months. In Žabljak, the average daily high is 19.6 °C in August but only 0.3 °C in January, and snow can cover the trails from November to April. What if something goes wrong?
Call 112, which alerts the mountain rescue service. In 2022 the 112 centre coordinated 55 rescue operations in the mountains, in which 91 people were rescued, 79 of them foreigners, and in 2024 it coordinated 50 rescue operations in which 83 people were rescued, 66 of them foreign tourists.
