Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks 2026: Perast Museum Ticket, Opening Hours, What to See on the Island and Why You Cannot Drive In

Perast is a small town in the Bay of Kotor whose main sights are the Perast Town Museum in the baroque Bujović Palace and the islet of Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela) with its church and treasury of votive gifts. A museum ticket costs 8 euros, 5 euros for children under 12, and a combined ticket with the Roman Mosaics in Risan 12 euros. From 15 April to 15 October the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 8 to 20 h, and in winter from 10 to 16 h. Boats leave for Our Lady of the Rocks from the Perast waterfront. The coastal road through Perast is closed to motor vehicles without a special permit, so you reach the waterfront on foot.

How much is a ticket to the Perast Town Museum?

• Entry is free for residents of the Municipality of Kotor, primary school pupils in Montenegro, people with disabilities, accredited tourist guides and ICOM card holders.
• The 15-euro combined ticket covers the Roman Mosaics in Risan, the Perast Town Museum, the Gallery of Solidarity, the Lapidarium in the Church of St Michael and the Church of St Paul in Kotor.
• The prices apply from 1 January 2025, and group visits must be booked.

When is the museum open?

• From 15 April to 15 October the museum opens Tuesday to Sunday, from 8 to 20 h.
• From 15 October to 15 April it opens Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 to 16 h.
• It is closed every Monday, throughout January, on Orthodox Easter, on 1 May and on 13 and 14 November.

What do you see in the museum?

• The museum was founded on 28 February 1937 and since 1948 has been housed in the 17th-century Bujović Palace.
• The captains' salon on the first floor holds portraits of Perast captains, among them Count Vicko Bujović, owner of the palace.
• The exhibition follows Perast's Venetian period from 1420 to 1797, when the town flourished as a maritime centre.
• Captain Marko Martinović organised the first naval school in the Balkans in Perast in 1698, and Matija Zmajević became an admiral of the Russian fleet in 1727.

What do you see on Our Lady of the Rocks?

• The islet is artificial, built up around a reef people called Škrpjel, and around a hundred ships were sunk around it by 1603.
• By tradition, 22 July 1452 is taken as the islet's birthday.
• Most of today's complex dates from after 1666, because the shrine was badly damaged in the Dubrovnik earthquake of 1667.
• The presbytery was built from 1720 to 1725 to designs by the local builder Ilija Katičić, and the round bell tower is unique in form on this coast.
• The main altar of white Carrara marble was commissioned by the Perast commune in 1796 from the workshop of the Genoese sculptor Antonio Capellano.
• The church holds works by Lovro Dobričević and Tripo Kokolja, and the collection includes an embroidery by Jacinta Kunić finished in 1828, made with silk, silver and gold thread and strands of hair.
• The shrine belongs to the Diocese of Kotor, and the ticket for the collection is bought on the islet.

What is the Fašinada?

• Every year on 22 July, at dusk, boats from Perast filled with stones and tied to one another sail to the islet to traditional songs.
• They drop the stones around the islet, in memory of the centuries it took to build.

Can you drive through Perast?

• Under a 2019 decision of the Municipality of Kotor, the coastal road through Perast is closed to motor vehicles from 15 May to 30 September, from 9 h to 1 h at night.
• The ban does not apply to residents with a parking space on their own plot, people with disabilities, fire engines, ambulances and vehicles with a special permit.
• Digital barriers that read number plates were installed in 2025.
• According to the Perast local community, an amendment adopted on 29 September 2025 extended the ban to the whole year for vehicles without a special permit.
