On the coast, pharmacies usually open at 07:00 and close at 20:00 or 21:00, with shorter hours on Sundays. Pharmacies are exempt from the Sunday trading ban.

Do you need a prescription?
It depends on the medicine. The register of medicines kept by CInMED, the Institute for Medicines and Medical Devices, shows for each product whether it is sold only on a doctor's prescription or without one, and the pharmacist can tell you the same at the counter. If you are insured with the Montenegrin Health Insurance Fund, a prescription from your chosen doctor can reduce the price; if not, you pay the full price, as explained in our guide to health insurance for foreigners.

CInMED sets a maximum wholesale price for each registered medicine, and the list was last updated on 9 September 2026. The retail price may add up to 18% for the pharmacy's costs, plus VAT, so the shelf price is somewhat higher than the figures below.
